چکیده

Background: The use of clinical signs may not be reliable to measure the hypnotic component of anaesthesia. Bispectral Index monitoring provides a direct measurement of the hypnotic effect of the anaesthetic agent used and it may have certain clinical advantages over clinical signs. Objective: This study consists of dose requirement of propofol with bispectral Index monitoring and without bispectral Index monitoring. Material and Methods: In the present study, 100 patients were randomly divided into two groups (50 in each group), one group received Standard dose of propofol while the other received propofol infusion with BIS monitoring. Results: Mean amount of propofol for induction used was 1.6 vs 2.24 mg/kg in bispectral index group and standard group respectively. The inference was that the induction dose of propofol by Bispectral index and by standard practice was statistically highly significant with P<0.001. Similarly mean amount of propofol for maintenance used was 5.70 vs 8.88 mg/kg/hr in bispectral index group and standard group respectively. The inference was that the maintenance dose of propofol by Bispectral index and by standard practice was statistically highly significant with P<0.001. Conclusion: Dose requirement of propofol was less and early recovery from anesthesia with bispectral Index monitoring.

EEG bispectral index monitoring in sevoflurane or propofol anaesthesia: analysis of direct costs and immediate recovery.

BACKGROUND Recent studies have suggested that electroencephalogram (EEG) bispectral index (BIS) monitoring can improve recovery after anaesthesia and save money by shortening patients' postoperative stay. We wanted to evaluate the direct costs of BIS monitoring and to measure immediate recovery after anaesthesia in patients with or without BIS monitoring. METHODS Eighty patients undergoing gy...

A randomized trial of propofol consumption and recovery profile with BIS-guided anesthesia compared to standard practice in children.

AIM To evaluate the impact of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring on the consumption of propofol and recovery from anesthesia compared to the standard clinical practice in children. BACKGROUND Titrating propofol administration using BIS reduces its requirement and shortens the recovery from anesthesia in adults. However, there is still mixed evidence for utility of anesthesia depth monitors in ...

Comparison of propofol consumption and recovery time in Caucasians from Italy, with Chinese, Malays and Indians from Malaysia.

Differences in sensitivity to anaesthetic drugs may exist among different ethnic groups. Allelic variants for drug metabolizing isoenzymes and pharmacokinetic differences may account for a variable response to some anaesthetic drugs. This study was designed to compare propofol consumption and recovery characteristics in four ethnic groups: Chinese, Malays, and Indians in Malaysia and Caucasians...

Comparison of bispectral EEG analysis and auditory evoked potentials for monitoring depth of anaesthesia during propofol anaesthesia.

We have compared the auditory evoked potential index (AEPIndex) and bispectral index (BIS) for monitoring depth of anaesthesia in spontaneously breathing surgical patients. Twenty patients (aged 17-49 yr) undergoing day surgery were anaesthetized with computer-controlled infusions of propofol. The mean (SD and range) of each measurement was determined during consciousness and unconsciousness an...

Comparison of target controlled infusion and total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil for lumbar microdiscectomy.

BACKGROUND Propofol is often combined with remifentanil for induction and maintenance of total intravenous anaesthesia. Target-controlled infusion (TCI) permits adapting infusion to pharmacokinetic models. In this study we compared depth of anaesthesia, haemodynamic variables and times to recovery in patients scheduled for lumbar microdiscectomy and receiving either manually controlled (group I...
